Jess Niemeyer is a traditional representational artist born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. She completed her undergraduate degree at Laguna College of Art and Design and currently resides in Los Angeles county.
My current body of work explores themes of introspection and self-searching by drawing ties between the beautiful and the dark. I am inspired by motifs that are viewed as unnerving or macabre, strange and unsettling. I strive to capture this unification in my work by placing my subjects in unusual or ambiguous settings. While working on my recent paintings, I have found myself searching inwardly to try and get a better understanding of how my personal experiences have changed and formed me. I depict this inward analysis in many of my paintings, typically in deep spaces, to show the visual idea of feeling “lost”. Along with this, I explore the feelings following this introspection of what I consider to be a “rebirth” of sorts. This difficult process of seeking or needing change in one’s life can empower and cause a shift in people and I use these dark or occult subjects to convey this inner analysis as a changing point to better oneself.
